WOMEN'S SUFFRAGE
ANOTHER DISORDERLY SCENE. FIFTEEN ARRESTS MADE. Press Association-By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, October 29. (Received Oct. 29, at 9.50 p.m.) The House of Commons was startled last evening when a suffrage placard ,ras thrust through the iron 'trellis of the Ladies' Gallery, whence shrill cries "Votes for Women" were heard. Two women wore found padlocked to the grating, with a chain engirdling their bodies. They declined to unlock themselves, and continued to shout and upbraid the male legislators. The police removed a portion of the grating, and conveyed the offenders, still attached to sections of the grating, to tho Committee Room, where locksmiths filed away the links and both wero liberated in the okl Palace yard. _ Simultaneously" with their demonstration ,i man. in the Strangers' Gallery opposite demanded justice for women, and threw lonlirfs on the floor of tho House. He was expelled. Later on another man diouM "Justice for the unemployed and votes for women! " and showered pamphlets on tho members' heads. He was, expelled, shouting and straggling fiercely. ; Meanwhile members of the Women's Freedom League, in twos and threes, had penetrated far into St. Stephens's Hall, and pretended- that they were waiting to see individual members' of the House of Commons. Suddenly they made an ineffectual but concerted rush at the lobby. Fourteen, including several outside— notably Miss -Maloney, of bellringing fame.—were arrested. Miss Maloney was on top of the pedcslal of the Richard Camr de Lion statue, near the entrance to the House of Lords. S!m tried to harangue a crowd in tho Palace yard. The Speaker has ordersd that the Ladies' and Strangers' Galleries k closed in future, Miss Muriel MatUreon, one of the padlocked women, informed an interviewer after her re'easo, that site had voted twice in Australian elections. Later on she was arrested on a charge of participating in a disturbance in the yard. Her companion, M:<s Fox, was not arrested, having disappeared.
