RAIMVAY ACCIDENT.
ENGINE DERAILED. (Pun United Peess Association.) CHPJSTCHUPiCH, October 28. The morning train from Whiteclifl's Darfiold yesterday came to griof at Glenttmnel, the result being the derailment of tho engine and some trucks. Tho engine, known as the D class, had run into the siding to .lift sonie, waggons of coal for Chmtcluireh. and while it was pulling out a rail broke, which caused tini engine to leave the track, taking two or Iht'PC trucks with il. Fortunately there was not much way on, or there 'would have been considerable, damage. As it was, the engine ran into a ditch alongside the line, the fore part getting stuck in a clay bank. A big gang of workmen was quickly collected, and under the directions of Guard Hill and Driver Kcuncdy set to work to replace the engine and vehicles. Word having tieen telephoned to Christchnrch,, arrangements were soon made for a special lo run out to Glentunnel to convey the passengers jtnd luggage to Christchurch, tho special leaving at 11.30 a.m. and reaching town about 1.30 p.m. Owing to (he morning being very wet and cold very few passengers were about, so that not much'inconvenience was felt. This portion of tlie track has just been relaid with heavy metals, but the work on the siding not having been completed the engine had to l'tui over .some old rails, a flaw in one, apparently being responsible for tho damage. The workmen engaged in the work of remaking the track were camped only a mile away, and being expert in this class of work' soon had everything straight, ■although the work had to be done in a drenching rain.
