LAWN TENNIS.

By Kacquet.

Tito local association has l:oen endeavouring to try anil have ladies ii<c!u<k>d i u the inierprovincial match with Canterbury on the 9tli prox., hut without succor, The northern body, for some reason or other, finds it impossible to do so on this occasion." Laurie now finds lie can make the trip, so 'ho will take lionnington's place in the team.

Ijuill, who is one of Canterbury's best, is at present in Australia, whither he litu gone to witness, the fight for the Davis Cup. His loss, however, will scarcely bo felt, as even without him Canterbury should lie more than a match for the best that Otago can put in. I notice the .Match Committee of the association has asked the following players to practice with a view to selecting the representative team—viz.: Messin It. S. Brown, S. X. liiowu (Halmnccv.'eii', C. J. liraithwaite and P. Seelvc (Ka-ituna), 1-1. Jlundle, J. Sinclair, and"A. Jv. Harraway ( Jtago), George, (lower (University), Pi. Jiauchop (Port Chalmers), and W." Bray (Hauroro). Sutton (Oamaru) and Thompson (lnvcreargill) have also been asked if they can make the trip if selected. Theso P iyers (with the, exception of C. G White, Utago) comprise the best players that could be chosen. The lirst four will not he- to hard to chose, but |li o eoimnit.leo ■ ■imr ii'Um-m K °°S of ,roul)le i'l pineM.. ~ ■ , slx 'h positions. , • Committee will be guided when selecting, I expect, largely by expuri- . ence.iu match and tournajuent play. It is true tha,t il takes',"im old dog for a ! Hard road, and a match «n oiten bo won by experience ao wainst superior spasmodic play I arr ; Uva.v,;.lteuclio, 1 , Gower, am limy should all-be iu the running, wlitle buttons and' Thompson's claims must .not bp overlooked. Scelyc can scarcely I'O considered in good enough form for this class of tennis. Braitliwa'ilo, on the other hand, should get in on his single play alone, although his double play wants a lot of improvement., The projwi' position on the court is where, lie fails'most. With the two Browns there shptiltl be no doubt. Bundle and Sinclair also.-acem to have a big chance. This latter - pair would rc- ' quire to play a much different game ,to that played on the 1 opening day. A good idea woujd lie to separate thorn in Iho ' Doubles (if they arc selected), as they do not eeem to work well together. The Hanover Club is the latest addition to tlio association ranks. Its membership is about 35 strong, and the courts- used bv the club are at present situated on tlio Kaikorai School grounds. This club will play in the Grade matches.

Du Croz (late of Oamaru) and Biown (Auckland) aro both playing for tho Gore Club. They are both keen players of more than average strength, and should bo a biK acquisition to tennis in that town. .The Mosaic! Ciub, "which has been late in starting this .season, has. lost a number of its strong gentlemen players, but the ladies' department is still' strong.. In reply to an inquiry "how to paint lit tho lines of a court?" I might state that the method that has given the best results lias been for one man to put a coating of "size" or "netting" over tho lino and another to come immediately behind him with the while paint.' The sizo prevents tho tar from the asphalt turning the paint brown, and at tho same time holds it.

Tennis appears to bo very popular, ih Canterbury this year, not only amongst clubs, but people with private courts entertain a lot just now; in fact, the game has become fashionable again. Tho United Chtb (Hagley Park! opened on Saturday, 10th, when tho president issued over 1000 invitations, the most of them being accepted, so the socne must have been a very animated one. i

No news has been heard lately from Oamaru or Invcrcargill. It would be pleasing to hear from these two important ccntres more often. , Sinclair in his ladder ' match with Bundle last week managed to change places with him. The two players each, has his day on and day off, and'the result of their matches witfa each other usually depends on this factor.

It is very gratifying to hear that tho association has appointed two such wellknown tennis enthusiasts as Messrs E. S. Black and P. J. Stilling to fill tho vacancies on tho vice-prcsidents' list. Their inclusion will greatly strengthen the managing body.
