(From Our OwfrCoERESPOiW.irr.) ' LONDON, September 18. ". BUTTEIS. ■!.' '' ■ Mcsers Weddel and Co. report that there' liavo been no arrivals of i butter, from Aus-> Iralia or New Zealand this week,.and with only 188 boxes iron' Australia, last week.' the only sales.made must' have been ex-' stocks held iri store, 'flic shipments'ibis l week from Australia, however,: show a■■ slight incrcaso over last week, 3100 boxes. being shipped, against 2250 the previous. week. No shipments are recorded frbm New Zealand.. ' No quotations of Aus: tralian or New Zealand butter arc .{riven, but 'Messrs Yl'cddcl mention that; Canadian has met with a very slow sale at from 116s to 117s for salted;, while, on account of a better demand being' experiencedfor saltless, 117s to 118s per cwt was made. The first arrival of Argentine came to hand last week, and amounted to 350cwt, for which 114s to 116s for salted and 117s to 118s for ealtless was made. The Danish Committee has advanced ils 'quotation by four kroner. The' arrivals of cheese during the week from Canada show an increase of 11,632cwt over last week, prices remaining steady at Jast week's' quotations. The Colonial Consignment and Distributing Company (Ltd.) states that the trad© during the past week has shown no sign of improvement, and values for most, classes of meat have been maintained with difficultv.. Although the pitchings at Smithficld are still short of the usual quantity, there is frequently much meat left over from day to day. North American chilled beef of good quality is very scarce, and is making 6d per lb, and even more in some cases, but the average value is from s|d to s|d per lb for hindquarters, while fores are worth 3Jd to 4d per lb. The supply of South American chilled is ample for present requirements, and, while the quality is good, it is not equal to some of tho shipments' which were marketed a short time ago.. To-day's values arc about the same as last week—viz., *id to per lb for hinds and 3id to 3id per lb for fore-' quarters. Ranch beef is being marketed in fairly large quantities, the supply being rather in excess of the demand. Homo-grown beef is going steadily into consumption at lato rates; values are, however, maintained with difficulty. English and Scotch mutton is in fair supply, but the demand is very dow. Dutch mutton, which is a great competitor, is very plentiful and the quality mixed, and in consequence tlieie is a very wide rango in values. The prime quality is making up to s?d per lb, while as low as 4Jd per lb has been touched for the' inferior. New Zealand Mutton.—No , fresh shipments have come to hand during the week, and there is no improvement to report in values. Cauterburys are a little more in evidonco and are being sold at 4d to 4jd per lb. There is, however, a plentiful supply of North Island mutton, which ia selling at last week's rates, and unless there is an improvement in tho demand there « a feeling that prices will ;ro lower, especially for the heavy grades. South American Mutton.—Tho arrivals consist of tho following:—Highland Scot, 24.000 carcases; La. Blanca, 41,000 carcases; and the Hermione, with 14,036 carcases, making a total of 79,036 carcaset for tho week.' The quality of Plate mutton now being offered is very satisfactory, and m consequence prices have ken'easily maintained. . " Australian Mufton.-Thc only arrival consists of 3535 carcases per Himalaya; the limited quantities received permit holders to maintain quotations at last rates. Frozen Lambs.—Kcccipls during the week ara confined to 132 carouses from Australia. The demand for N»w Zealand lambs lias- been most disappointing; only light weights meet with any inquiry, and the extreme value of these is si<l per lb; medium and heavy weights are cvry difficult to move and prices have a downward tendency. Fimon Beef.—About 30,000 quarters havu eome to hand from South America. Ther-; has not been quite the sinic aclivc demand for frozen beef, but prices show vory little change, and fores, if anything, have a slightly firmer tc-ndoncy.
