(Per United Press Association.) RALMERSTON N., October 26. Late to-night a man wa 6 knocked down by a motor car at Sanson and hilled. jNo particulars are yet available. NELSON, October 26. The infant son of Mr J. H. Lines, settler, Wai-iti, -was playing in a. paddock, whan ].: s sister heard a noise. vShe went out and found the child.lying unconscious with a contused wound in the head. It is supposed that a horse in the paddock kicked the cliild. A doctor was sent for, but death ensued a few hours later CHRISTCHURCH, October 25. James Weir, aged 25, residing at LinTvcod, cut his throat with a razor last night, dying almost immediately. -Ho had been suffering from consumption. An inquest was held Wore Mr H. W. Bishop to-night. James M'Lacldan, machinist, of Cambridge street, Liinvood, said deceased had been lodging at witness's house on and off for the last 10 months. Deceased, who was a farrier, was an assisted immigrant, and landed in New Zealand in December last. Ho did not look well when he came to live with witness, but had not complained of Iris health until lately. On Sunday night lie was spitting blood. Dr Sandstein was called in. Witness had just afterwards told Weir that the doctor had given him instructions to put a wet pack on his chest, and witness went out into the kitchen to secure the pack. He returned about 30 seconds later, and found Weir lving on the bed with his throat cut. Weir was 25 years of age, and had a wife in the Old Country. Deceased had always appeared cheerful, and witness thought he wa,s a most unlikely man to commit suicide. Dr Sandstein stated that he had attended Weir for the first time on Sunday night. He was expeeorating blood from the lungs in considerable quantities. He was pale and feeble, and there were marked evidences of consumption in the left lung. Witness told him his were affected. There was no immediate danger, and witness had not told him anything that would tend ty. make him despondent. The magistrate said the act was a most unaccountable one. He returned a verdict that Weir had committed suicide by cutting his throat with a razor, but that there was no reason to account for the act. A telegram was received by Inspector O'Brien last evening io the effect that an infant, four weeks old, nanitd William Eusfell, 'had di?d suddenly yesterday morning at Raianui. There were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death, hut as no doctor had been attending the infant the coroner was informed of the fact.
