WAIKOUAITI NOTES.

(From Oup. Own Coiuiessondrht.) WAJK.QUA.ITI, August 1. The ordinary monthly meeting of tho Ilawksbury Borough Council was held oil Mouday, the 27th. 3 uly. There \7M;e present— Tho Mayor (Mr A. BeokJer), and CouncillorsIrwin, Maxwell. Russell, Smith, Stewart, Townsend, Vanes, arid Williamson. A number of circulars, etc., were read and received, and several applications for repairs to streets weie. roiericd to the Works Committee. It was agreed to procure a further supply of 2J-inch metal from tlio Logan's Point Quarry. The Mayor suggested that more Marram grass be planted this year at the extension uf Beach, street in order that the approach to tho Uwch might be prot-soted from santl drift. It was decided to call a public meeting for the purpose of considering tho best method of carrying out the work. The Mayor reported that tho Waikouaiti County Council Was willing to assist in stripping and denning out the rotten reck quurry, and .would hoar half tho cost. It was proposed by Cr Townsond that, iu view of tho increase of the valuation of tiho rateable properties in the borough, the general rate for the current year he five-eighths of a penny in the pound. This was seconded by Or Stewart. An amendment to t'-hs clfoct that the rr-ie bo threefarthings was proposed by Cr Smith, who strongly urgoil that, tho present rate te retained, and. pointed out that.there would lw a considerable increase during the year iu tho cost of street maintenance. Tho aniondmcnt mis seconded by Cr Vanes, audi on 'being put to the meeting was oarri<xl : by five to three. As a result of the new valuation the rate of three-farthings is estimated to produce £235—an increase of some £15 over last j-ear. Accounts amounting to £55 15s lOd were passed 'or payment. The annua.l bacholors' ball was held on Friday evening in the Public Hall. Tho wcait/rer being line, there was » very large attendance, and this year's fixturo proved to bo quite as successful and enjoyable as any held' formerly. Messrs George Thompson and L. Beasley acted efficiently as Al.Cv's, tho music was supplied by Mr J. Appkby's band, while an abunffant supper of good tilings was provided by Mr W. Williams. The number of old-age pensioners who reside in the Waikouaiti district is steadily) increasing. A recent return shows that there are now 60 on the list, and that the payments amount annually to over £1400.
