The Leader of thy Opiiositiou' roceut.lv drew attention to the fact that there wa"s no appeal from the valuation put upon the estates of deceased persons by the Stamp Doirartmo.nl. In one ease a farm wi.s valued at £25 an acre, but- the Stamp Department refused 1o accept the valuation, and sent its own valuer, who put up the valuation to tctvrccMi £36 mid Mi per acre. The widow bad to pav duty on that valuation, there being „ 0 appeal Another ease was that of a man who IwuMit land at under £3000. He died n comparatively short time afterwards, and the hcnftncisrit* of the cslate were coinixdlcd to pay stamp duty on £9000. When the lOslimaWs were under discussion in the House this afternoon Mr reverted to the subject and ibe Prime -Minister made a satisfactory reply.
