CITY GUARDS' SOCIAL.

The annual presentation of prizes won by members of the Dunedin City Guards tool: place on Thursday evening in the Carlton Rooms, Capt.. Douglas presiding. There was a good attendance of members and friends, and 60veral ladies' were present. On this occasion the company advanced a step on previous jears, when the proceedings have been limited to the presentation of prizes, by making a eoyial evening of it. Among those present were Lieut.eolonol Smith and Major Crawford, apologies for absence being received from Lieut.-colonel Smyth, Lieut-colonel Stoneham, Captains Dempster and Washer. The officers of the company present in addition to Captain Douglas were Lieutenants Jack and Willoughby. It may be mentioned that tho full strength of the company is now 67, which is over the required number. The encouragement of shooting is a strong j feature in the company, and tho prizes j presented this year are considerably over i £50 in value. Another inducement to j members 1o shoot, is that ammunition its provided free of-cost, and markers are placed at the disposal of the men. Captain Douglas said, on behalf of the company, ho had much pleasure in welcoming ail present to the social function and [ the annual presentation of prizes. They generally managed to have a smoke concert, but : tho members of the company had thought ! this rather selfish, and had decided on the ' present occasion to have a progressive ! euchre partv and a little music, and invite i their lady friends to be present and partici- • pate in what he hoped would be a pleasant j evening. Ho explained that there would i ; be four prizes—two for the winning lady j and gentleman and two for tho boobies. | The game then started, and the party be- ; oame a very merry one, and play was con- ; tinued until 10 games had been got ] through. Thereafter music was indulged I in, among 'tho singers being Mrs Tatfrerefield, Miss Rutherford, Mr J. Jago, Mr P. ' Salter, Mr A. Harrison, Sergeant Jones, j Corporal Edwards, Privates Johnston and i Quitter. Others who contributed to the ] enjoyment of tho evening were Messrs ■ Roper (2) and Boyd, who played a trombone solo. Tile accompaniments were effi- ! ciently played by Quartermaster-sergeant j West, of tho B Battery. There was an ' abundanoe of refreshments provided, which , j were done ample justice to. The prizes won during the past year were presented by Lieutenant-colonel Smith, the following being the prize-winners:— Bolt Match: Sergeant Mills 1, Private Sonn-tag 2. Private Jones 3. . Officers' Match: Sergeant Mills 1, Corporal Lnnn 2, Private Sonntag 3. Citizens' Match: Private Sonntag 1, Private Parsons 2, Sergeant Mills 3, Sergeant Baird 4, Private Livingstone S. Throe-days' Match: Private Jones 1, Private Parsons 2, Sergeant Milk 3. This match was held during tho time the men were at Trentham. One-day's , Match: Corporal Dugcran _1, Lieutenant Willoughbv 2, Bugler Mellich 3, Private Sonntag 4, Serjeant Baird 5. Second-class Match: Private Parsons 1, Bugler Mellick 2, Private Livingstone 3. Cash prizes in Cup Match: Lieutenant "Willougnby, Sergeants Mills, Husband, and Baird, Corporals Lunn and Duegan, Bugler Mollick, Privates Johnston, Sohoen, Livingstone, Jones, Care, Sonntag, and Parsons. Service Match: Privates Johnston aTid Sonntag, lieutenant. Jock, Corporal Puggan, Sergeant Baird, Corporal Lunn, Privates Livinpfitone, Jones, Sohoen, Sergeant j Husband, lYivate' Christensen, Sergeant Mills, Lieutenant "Willoughby, Privates Arlidge, Jones, and Webster. The Service Matoh consisted of five competitions under service conditions. |
