The Rakiura arrived yesterday morning from Catliiis and Waikawa, and idler working cargo sailed again in the afternoon for Lytt niton, via way ports, having on board a quantity of explosives for the firsl-named. Captain Marks reports having been bar-bound for 24 hours at Collins after putting out cargo, but otherwise no inconvenience was experienced in working the port, which has not been visited by a similar vessel for many years. It is reported that the Anchor Company's twin-screw steamer Tasnian. employed in tho Wellington-Nclson-Motucka trade, ha* been sold to the Northern Steamship Company of Auckland. The Tasmah was built in Auckland four or five years ago at the yards of R. Logan, sen., and was engined by Eraser and Sons, of tho Thames. According to the Washington correspondent of the Yorkshire Post! the United States Naval Department ha-, practically completed its plans for making a great dock and mid-Pacific base of supplies at Pearl Harbour, Hawaii. The deck will be of the granite-concrete tvpe, and will be nearly 900 ft in length. The estimated cost will be £2,0011,000, and the dock will have complete coaling, cold storage, wharfage, and repairing equipment. The' old coal hulk Marie, which was towed from Wellington to Lyftelton some years ago, has been disposed of bv the Westport Coal Company, to Mr M. J. Miller, who has lifted out her big iron mast and "stepped" it in the Blackball. The copper is being stripped from the sides of the .Mario, and her gear lias been removed. Mr Miller intends to have the old vessel towed across to one of the Ix-aches at Puraii, whercjhe will be set fire to with the object of securing a larjtc quantity of " knees'' and other ironwork useful to a shipwright, from the hull.. Latest mail advices received by the Patca Shipping Company from their en'gincer, Mr Bennett, who is supervising tho building of the company's new steamer Arapawa, slate that the new boat will probably be launched to-day from the yards of John Fullcrton and Co., of Paisley. The Arapawa will then be taken up the Clvdo to Irvine to have her boiler and machinery fitted. Some alterations and improvements are being made to the Westport Coal Company's coal hulk Darra, and the work is .being carried out by .Mr M. J. Miller. The whole of the poop is being taken off down to the deck level, and another hatch will ho cut in tho after end of tho hulk. A new steam boiler of 29 horsepower (nominal) by Messrs Andersen's (Ltd.) will be installed in the 'tween decks right aft, to supply steam to the winches. Tho Adelaido Steamship Company's steamer Grantala on a recent run from Fromantlc, via ports, to Sydney, had a couple of trials of sped with tho French mail steamer Salazio on the way round. According to the account of' the officers of Iho Grantala, on emerging from King George's Sound the Salazie was sighted on tho beam, she having left Fremantle (he same time as the Grantala, also bound for Adelaide. The sporting instinct of the passengers was aroused in anticipation of an ocean race, and thero was much speculation as to which of tho two steamers would reach port first. Doubts on tho matter, however, woro soon allayed, for the Grantala proved herself to be the faster boat, and by 10 o'clock the same night the Salazic's lights had disappeared in the distance astern. Tho Grautala's average speed was about 15 knots. The new Holland-America liner Rotterdam, built by Harland and Wolff, at Belfast, is described as the heaviest ship in tho world, with a capacity of 25,000 tons gross and 20.000 net. Her length i,s 677 ft, width 7Sft depth 56ft. From top to bottom there are 11 decks and the engines aro 14,000 horse-power, giving a, speed of 17 knots. Tho Rotterdam will acrammodato 3540 passcngers-2500 (bird class, 515 second, and 525 first. For -Ww first class passengers there arc 100 bathrooms. In tho centre of the ship is a central court or winter garden, of flowers, ferns, and palms, under a domed glass roof. From what could bo gleaned on board yesterday afternoon, the barque Renfieid 13 severely handicapped by her rig during a fair wind. Being- barquentine-i-iggcd", she only carries sqnaresails on her foremast, her other three masts being rigged for fore-and-aft canvas only. Experience shows thst in a fair wind it. is only the canvas on tho foremast which helps' the vessel to any extent, and on such occasions her other canvas is kept furled, and her spread of canvas being necessarily limited to that extent, she does not make such good progress as she would if she wore rigged as a barque.. In spite of this drawback, however, she is said to he a fino vessel hi a seaway, and as verv little water finds its way on board, she" is regarded as being a very "dry ship." THE RENFIELD'S PASSAGE. After lying at anchor within the Heads all night, the barquontine Renfieid was towed up to town yesterday morning and berthed at Raltr.iv street at 1 p.m.,' and will commence discharging cargo to-day. Captain E. Mann, her commander, reports having cleared Wellington Heads about noon on duly 3, bound for Dunedin. A strong N.W. wind carried the barquentine to ltaikoura Peninsula, and then shifted to S. and S.li., blowing fresh for four days and driving the vessel back to Cook Straits' On July 12 and 13 light N. to fresh N E and N.W. winds brought the vessel south as far as Timaru, but on the 14th she met strong southerly winds and gales, which lasted until July 20. On the following evening Taiaroa Heads was signalled for a tug and pilot, but although thero wero prevented from getting outside owing to tho heavy sea, Captain Mann wa.s unable to make himself aware of tho position and as the wind fell calm, the ship drifted cose inshore. At 2 a.m. next mornin" the wmd came up. fresh from the south and the vessel was again driven up the' coast as for as Oamaru. Southerly winds and calms prevented the vessel from mal--imr port, and on tho 26th Taiaroa Heads were again sighted, when it fell calm, and three day,, later tho Renfieid was sighted by the Fifeshire abreast of Oamaru. Light winds- brought her slowly along to within about 16 miles of the Heads on Thursday where she was picked up by tlie til" and brought in as above
