(Pbr United Pbess Association.) lIAWERA, July 28. Mr John Driver, who was selected as the Opposition candidate for the Patea seat, has retired from the contest. (Fbom Oub Own Cobrespondent.) WELLINGTON, July 28. After considerable pressure, Mi' F. F. Hockley has consented to contest the Rangi-' tikoi seat in the Opposition interest. Tho candidate Jins given valuable service to tho district in politics, and it is coneidcrcd that he will have a good chance against Mr Remington, tho sitting member. It may be taken for granted that it will be for the Taieri eeat that Mr Thomas Mackenzie will be a candidato at tho general election. It is anticipated that Mr H. H. liiglis, solicitor, will stand in tho Opposition interest. A petition is in circulation, asking Mr W. J. Dickie, chairman of tho Mount Huti Road Board, (o contest tho Sehvyn seat as a supporter of tho Government in opposition to Mr C. A. C. Hardy. M.P. Tho first shot in the campaign for the Wairau seat has been fired by Mr Frank Shaw, who addressed a meeting' and declared himself a candidate on behalf of the Liberal, Labour, and Temperance interests. He strongly supported Mr M'Nab's land policy as an ideal admixture of the freehold principle and State tenure, and ho advocated the schomo of Labour legislation recently outlined by Dr Findlay. While adhering to the' three-fifths majority, ho was in favour of the rigid reformation of tho liquor traffic in the direction o,f a. close inspection of liquor, tho licensing of the hotel-keeper instead of the hotel, and the stricter regulation of. clubs.
