UNIVERSAL PEACE

MR LLOYD-GEORGE'S VIEWS. BRITAIN AND GERMANY. Press Association-By Telegraph-Copyright. LONDON, July 29. (Received July 29, at 11.40 p.m.) Addressing a meeting at the Queen's Hall in connection with (he Universal Peace Conference, Mr Lloyd-George, in deprecating mutual distrust between Britain and Germany, said the only real thing was the expenditure. We started it, and we had an overwhelming preponderance at sea. Yet, not satisfied, we said let there be Dreadnoughts. What for? We did not require them, nobody else was building them, and, moreover, we always claimed the need of the two-Power standard for defence. Germany, whose army was her sole defence against invasion, had no two-Power standard. It was deplorable that two great and progressive nations like Britain and Germany should be unable to establish a good understanding. We had done this with France. Russia, arid America, and why should we not rope Germany in. —(Cheers.) The money spent on armaments might then be spent on fighting intemperance, ignoi'ance, crime, and disease, which were worse enemies than Germany.
