SCENIC RFSERVES

DEPUTATION TO MR M'GOWAN, (Phi TJhitm Pbess Association.) AUCKLAND, May 12. _ Tho question of tho extension of Auok'« land's soenio reserves was tonohod uponi by tho Mayor in the course of all interview, with tho H >n. James M'Gowan to<lay. Mr Myers said that adjoining tho council's land at Waitokcrci was, a large lcMiri forest belonging' to tho Kauri Timber Company. In view of tbo approaching extinction of the kauri it was thought that this might well bo preserved as a eccnic rceprvo, partly bccauso of its virgin state and also on account of its easy access to tho oity. With this end in view the council, asked the Government to contribute half tho oost oB securing the property, tho municipality paying tho remainder, and thus noquiring it as a part of a rooroat.ion ground for visitors from all parts of Now Zealand as well as tho oitizems of Auckland. Mr M'Gowan, in reply, said tho matter camo more directly under tho control of the Minister of Lands, and ho ywould be glad to represent their request to him. Many scenio reserves had been made, and .ho feared that eome of them would bo carried ■ off by fire. The greater th 6 number of sightseers to these places the greater wa3 the danger from fire. Personally, ho saw no objeotion to tho proposal, and promisod to bring the matter boforo tho Minister for Lands.
