MUNRO'S GULLY, TUAPEKA.

Sih,—ln a recent issue you gave an acoount of the golden, wedding- of Mr and Mre L'inlay Munro, and said that Munro's Gully was named after Mr F. Munro, who cam& to Otago in 1862.

I think thore is some mistake, and should very much like to know fuller particulars. I always understood that Munro's Gully was named after Mr George Munro, who was shepherdjng in the Tuapcka district for Messrs Musgrove and Murray as far back aa 1858. Ho crossed the first sheop over the Waitahuna River in that year. Ho was then 33 years of age, so that now lie would be 83 years old. He was there all through the" first rush to Gabriel's in 1861 and long after. Ho paid a visit to the district in March, 1905, and drove a flock of sheep over the Waitahuna River at the same ford where he had crossed the sheep 47 years previously. The Rev. A. B. Todd," Presbyterian minister stationed at Tokomairiro in 1861, wrote a fchort account of his visit to Gabriel's gold diggings. He reached Tuapeka on July 13, 1861, "and lodged that night in the shepherd's (Munro) house at

tho head of the gully, on the other side of tho spur. On Sabbath, July 14, I conducted divine service in tho open air. Standing on a cart, I preached to about

700 people. ... A second service was held' in the afternoon, with a smaller number in Munro's Gully." So the gully lv;d tliat name in 1861. iTiistinj that Mr F. Munro or somo of your readers will set' mo right,—l am, etc., • W. IT. S. Roberts.
