LONG-DISTANCE CYCLING
AN AUSTRALIAN TOUR. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. BRISBANE, September 6. The cyclist Birtks has started on a trip across and ground Australia. Francis Birtles, of overland fame, departed from Sydney on August 22 at 3 p.m. on another overland trip from Sydney to Port, Darwin, via Brisbane. Ho returns through Central Australia, Adelaide, and Melbourne, to Sydney. Thia to a distanco of about 7000 miles. Birtlea expects to average 63 miles per day, and to be 111 days on his journey. Thcro Was an attendance of about 1000 people,to.see tho ov-br lander start on his trip. Birtles was given a cheer by the crowd which absolutly blocked tho traffic at times, aa he pedalled away. His machine, which v/eiphs 721b, was fitted up specialty for the ride, and has a water tank fitted and other articles wliidh are useful on such a trying trip. He carries a tent with, him, too , -
