THE LATE MR JOYNT

EXPRESSIONS OP SYMPATHY. (Per United Pbess Ass.ocia.tiok.) CHRISTCHURCH, September 6. A largo number of local legal practitioners assembled at the Supremo Court this morning, when reference was made to the death of Mr T. I. Joynt, K.C. Ilis Honor Mr Justice Chapman paid that, bcoro the proceedings of tho court commenced that, morning ho desiicd to make reference to a. circumstance which must havo been present to tho minds of tho gentlemen of tho bar for the last two days, and that, was tho death of their lamented colleague, the senior member of the bar of-the Canterbury district, and in virtue of Jug patent, as King's Councillor the senior member of Ihe bar in Now Zealand, next to tho J,aw Officers of the Crown. ITe need hordlv say how deeply the death of Mr Joynt would bo felt ill the district, for he had so long; been associated with tho profession and with the affaire of Mm province that his loss ' muet make a grcsai; gap. As a professional Mr Joynt always stood at the forefront in tho conduct of his professional business. Ho set a noblo example to thoso above him. not merely with respect to tho ability and industry which ho always exhibited in tho interests of his clients, but with respect to the high and honourable tone which he always adopted , and held in professional matters. Personally, no doubt, the' members of the liar would all feci his loss in the long oontact with his gentle and genial disposition. Personally, he felt that himself. He had known Mr Joynt int.ima.telv for more t.lian 30 years, and 'ho always felt that ho. was ono of fchose men with -whom one could always sympathise, and in whose l'.i'escnce one always felt, responsive companionship. Mr Joynt was known to the profession throughout New Zealand, and ho had no doubt that his brother judges would feel what he felt in connection with tho loss of Mr Joynt. lie had received telegrams from the Chief Justice and Mr Justioe Deonuton expressing their sympathy. Tho close personal association between his Honor tho Chief Justice ajid Sir Joyiifc when thoy were both professional men wao well known, and the circumstance that.Mr Joynt had worked with honour and crcdit before Mr Justice. Denniston for 60 many yoavs had naturally caused his Honor to feel deeply the loss which the Christchurch bar and ho had sustained. Ho could only conclndo by again saying how "deep the loss was to the Canterbury district and to the bar here.. One could-not, however, but feel, some satisfaction in tho fact that-Mr Joynt had roaehcd'.a fairly ripo old 1 age, and that his end was not accompanied by any painful circumstances or prolonged illness?' Mr T. W. Stringer, K.C.. said 'that, on behalf of. the Christclmrch bar, he : desired to say that thoy cordially endorsed the kjndly expressions that his Honor had just given utterance to witli regard to'their'lato colleague Mr Joynt ' Personally, ho felt ■his loss 'very deeply. He was articled to him in 1874, when he was at the zenith of his career as ono. of the most able and strenuous advocates of tho day, \ Since that, time he had onjoyod the closest personal and professional friendship with him, and ho fully agreed with what his Hon&r had said: that the zeal Mr Joynt always displayed in any cause that was entrusted to him, and the care and unremitting attention that ho gave to any business, was an example not only , to'his pupils who served him, but to the younger members of tho profession generally.. The members .of the, Christchurch bar deeply doplored the loss of Mr Jovnt,- but it was somo satisfaction, to know that' lie worked practically all the' days of his life, and that was what ho would have wished to havo done.
