NEW ZEALAND SWIMMING ASSOCIATION.

A meeting of the New Zealand Swimming Association (Otago Centre) was held on Saturday evening at tho officc of Messrs lark Reynolds, and Co., Mr J. A. Park presiding. , ■ A communication was received, from E v. """K challenging A. M'Milian to to 440 yds at Morgan's Baths, rl- Hooper wrote explaining tho conditions on which tho .cup, tho subject of the challenge, had been given.—Mr Hoopor to bo requested to draw up an agreement showing (hat the centre held the cup'for competition; tho challenge to stand over owing to Mr M'Milian being unwell. The Invercnrgiil Club wrote that tho schoolboys' championships had been successfully decided, and that the High School had also held a competition. The writer enclosed certificates.—Certificates to bo endorsed and forwarded to the associalion for the issue of modals.—Tho. same writer applied for 12 first, class proficiency certificates and 1 two second class certificates for pupils in the Southland Boys' High School.—To no forwarded to the council of the association'. . !

A lengthy communication was received from the secretary of tho Royal Lifc-savinc Society, London, forwarded handbooks, charts, etc.. and welcoming tho idea of a branch of tho sooiety lxung 1 formed in New Zealand—A reply to bo sent thanking the society for the _ books,' charts, etc., andagreeing to affiiiato until a properly-con-stituted branch of the society was formed. Also, that copies of tho books and 1 charts be forwarded' to tho Mayor of the eity and the chairman of tho Reserves Committee. Attention was drawn toVi item of £6200 placed upon the Estimates of tho Fousn for swimming, and to the fact that Mr .T, C., Thomson, M.U.R., had bren informed by tho Minister that it would not be given for schools.—Tho seoretarv was instructed to write to Mr .T. 0. Thomson and Mr J. F. Arnold, M.H.R., requesting them to ascertain what tho money was really for. The secretary was also instructed to inquire what had become of 1000 books on

life-saving sent out by the High Commissioner for Now Zealand (tho Hon.. W. P. Reeves). to tho New Zealand Government, several years ago, and of which nothing had been hoard 1 by the Oiago Centre. The Chairman expressed pleasure at the fact that tho Reserves Committee of the City• Council'had 'taken tho matter of a public swimming hath up. Ho hoped the report would bo a -satisfactory one. The Secretary ,(Mr J. 0. K. Sibbald) placed before the meeting a revised circular to bo issued to schools in Otago and Southland in regard to swimming competitions generally, and giving Ml information as to particulars concerning same—This was approved, and the seoretarv was instructed to send the circular out. This year thero will be several life-saving competitions included in the programme, and a suggestion is mado that school children should be encouraged to write essays on life-saving. Tho draft annual report was submitted by the scoretarj, and approved. This will be considered at the annual meeting.
