Stcnhouse, Tt. Malheson, 11. O'Neill, J. O'Connoll, and 0. Clark. .COKMSrOHDIKCS. It, M'Oregor, of Pigroot, wrote ashing permission to put in an open culvert in a level arossing for carrying wafer for mining purposes at a point between Pigroat and Shag River—The county inspector offered no pbje'etion to a good culvert, but disapproved of an open cut across'the road.—The work to be dome to the satisfaction of the inspector, and a covered culvert to be put in. A. Pillon Bell, Waihemo, wrote asking the council's permission to erect telephone poles on' tho short stretch of road (about half or three-quarters of ■ a mile) from T. Ross's house at Stoncbridgc, Dunback, to tho railway station, as under tho now regulations just issued by the Telegraph Department it ■was intended :to connect Ross's telephono to the Dunback bureau.—Tho Chairman fctaled that as it was intended to proceed ■with tho erection of the poles at once, he had given the necessary permission.—Received, and tho action ■of the chairman approved, •Correspondence was read from the Roads Departmdiit. and also from A. D. 801 l stating that matters in connection with exchange of certain roads in Shag Valley had been duly Bigiicd.—Received. The Secretary of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board wrote stating that as matters in disputo botwecii the board and tlio Bene-' volent Institution Trustees had not yet been settled, the board' was unable to maio arrangement*. • with the County Council for the distribution of charitable aid.—Received. A memorandum was received from tho Prime Minister's office, Wellington, dated August H, acknowledging receipt of tho council's lottor of 3rd inst, regarding tho boundary of the Waikouaiti electorate. The memorapdum stated that tlio council's views on the matter had been duly noted.—Sir T. Mackenzie, M.H.R, also wrote acknowledging receipt of tho council's resolution in the matter.—Received. ■

The Treasury Department forwarded n memorandum stating that £1 10s 6d, goldfiolds revonue for. July, hadboen remitted lo tho crcditof the council: and tho Secretary lo tho Land Board forwarded a statement ot " thirds" and •" fourths" for period February • 25 to June 1, 1907.—Received; and allocation of thirds" and "fourths" approved. IKFP.CTIOUB DISEASES. Letters dealing with matters relating to tho Infoctious Diseases Hospital referred to at the Wngistrute's Court inquiry at Dunedin on l'riday last were received from Messrs J. H, Hoßkuig and Donald Roid, solicitors. Tlio Clerk atated, in this connection, that he had made application to tho Minister of Public Works for a refund of tho amount expended, by the council in providing a building and isolating the Chinese leper at. Maoraos, but had not yet. received-a reply. The amount was £86 8s 6d, and the application was made on August 9.—The Chairman elated that tlio leper referred to Ibkl bceu isolated ■by the council for a number ot years. A hut was specially erected for the' case, and when the patient died.the building and its contents were destroyed by fire. In the report of tho proceedings at the Magistrate's Court on Friday lest ie-(tue.ohai.r--man) waa credited with saying that "one of the infdolious cases in Waihemo County was a Chinese- leper, mid that isolation had been tried in the case there and was found to be unsuccessful." What ho said, was that tho lopor had been isolated for years at, Hho county's expense, and that the isolation was successful. On tho genera! quostion ot an infectious diseases hospital he recognised that such an institution was necessary in the city,-not only in tho interests of the city, but also as a moans of preventing infection spreading into tho country. And what applied to tho city in tliiß inattor ftlfci applied to tlio country—it was necessary to have provision made to prevent infection spreading, from the country into neighbouring parts and into the city. If infectious diseases occurred iii the country the health authorities would be compelled to provide the necessary isolation and to take all necessary measures to prevent such, diseases from spreading. It was not cquitablo, however, that'country districts should he called upon to contribute to an infectious disoases hospital in Dunedin and whon infection had lo lie dealt with in their own districts that the local bodies should be- saddled with all tho expense and responsibilities. Whatever infection occurred it wiw the joint responsibility of the whole eharitablo aid district to attend to it and (o bear tho cost.

The correspondence was received, and the council approved of tho proposal in Jfr D. Hold's letter that an amending bill should he introduced into Parliament to make oharilable oid authorities responsible for a refund of cost of treatment of infection in country districts.
