KAIKORAI DRAINAGE COMMITTEE.

A meeting of the Kaikorai Drainage Committee.of Taieri Comity Council was held at Dunedin on Saturday Cr Samson in the chair.

The County Engineer (Mr B. B. Couston) reported that, in company with the Hon. George M'Lcan, he hud waited in Wellington on the Hon. Ueorge Powlds, Minister of Public Health, and the Hon. .T. A. Millar with regard to the bill to be presented to.Parliament to constitute a drainago district and board to deal with the sewage of the Kaikorai Valley watershed. Consequent on the delay that has occurred through the proposals of the hill'boroughs to join the Dunedin Drainage Board and carry their towage through the Caversham tunnel, the lime has now gone- past when the bill can be advertised and presented without a suspension of the Standing Orders. The Minister of Public Health was prepared to facilitate the passing of the hill, but Mr Millar was opposed to the measure on Roslyn's account. In face of the opposition, Mr Fowlds advised the council.io withdraw its bill this session, and he would pjrsonally during the recess convene a meeting of local bodies interested, and, failing an agreement being arrived at, would advise that a Government commission he appointed to inquire into the whole question. Cr ,-Sjunson said he was of opinion that the names tf the hill boroughs should .now bo deleted from the bill, and that Taieri and ,Grcen Bland should combine

to constitute a district and formulate a scheme for tne drainage of the Valley from the Cattleyards to Green Island, with chemir.il or bacterial precipitation works at Green Island. Such a scheme he considered might be carried out for £5000. Or Steven, fon proposed that advantage be taken of Dr Mason's presence in Dmiedin this week to again invite the bodies interested to a conference, when, if no agreement were arrived at. the Taieri bodies might proceed by themselves. This was agreed to, and it was resolved to instruct Mr Hosking to proparo a modification of the present bill suitable for a reduced area, and lo take steps to convene a meeting of the local bodies on Dr Mason's arrival.
