WRECK OF A SCOW.
Ti'iE SURPRISE ASHORE.
SUPPOSED LOSS OF FOUR LIVES.

AUCKLAND, July 23. A telegram from Tairua. states that a messenger from Ohui has just ridden over and reported that the scow Surprise went ashoro on the rocks about a mile from tfce north end oi Ohui beach, and is a total wreck.
Tho captain, mate, and two seamen • are supposed to have beon drowned. A fifth hand got aahore and found his way to Ohui, where ho is being well looked after by Mr J as. M'Gregor. Ho is badly knocked about, and rambles a little in his talk, but is expected to be well in a day or two. His namo is Harry Jackson. From what can bo gathered from his account the scow dragged her anchors right from Slipper Island, and went ashore on tho coast early on Sunday morning. On tho 28th of last month the members of the crew wore:-J. T. Jallicro (skipper), who was taken on in place of R. W. ClifTc (who was sick when tho vessel was last here); H. W. Jaekson, aged 20, of Norfolk Island; A. Stewart, aged 19; E. Johansen, aged 19; W. Kelly, a-ged 17. The last two members of the crow were signed on when tho vessel was here last month, and the above list comprised the crew at the time she left this port.
