AMUSEMENTS.
<. ALHAMBRA THEATRE. An entertainment was given last evening laat evening was bright, breezy, and bri<-k. The acrobatic Ahlbcirgs are the principal feature in a strung programme, which comprises such favourites as Mr Clarence Tisdnle (vocalist exlraordinaiy), Miss Ida Berridge, Ma- Percy Denton, the Armstrong "and Verne combination, Me*?,rs H. Linden, Hud Peterson, and Jco Woodward.
ENTERTAINMENT IN FIRST CHURCH HALL. An entertainment was given last oveniiiß in the First Church Hall, luider tho auspices of the First Church Young Women's Club. Tho prograrmr-e. which was of a varied nature, included Shnkesppa.ro readings by members of the Shakespeare Club.quarte l ?, »l<w, and a clarionet duet. The solos were l.icely rendered by Jits Morion, jun., and Mrs Ci lover, Mr Binnie and Mr Fyte, and Messrs M'Lennan and Brundell contributed a clarionet duet, selection from " Xornin," in a very effeotive manner. Quartets by Messrs Armstrong, M'Gcorge, Hale, and Soirle were well rendered, and as an exhibition of part singing this portion of tho programme wiw much appreciated. A first-class reading of llio trial scene in the " Merchant of Venice" was given by members ct the Shakespeare Club, the characters boing allotted as follows:—Duke, Mr T. \V. Whitson; Antonio. Mr C. D. Davey; Bassanio, Mr P. V. Blandford: Crratiano, Mr L. T. Burmud; Sliylock. Mr H. S. Osboru; Portia, Miss D. Gard'ncr; Nerissa, Miss E. Roberta. All the pa-rte were cert.fully read, Portia's lines and there of Sliylock being given with full emphasis ar.d without undue straining alter dramatic effect. In a reading from " Macbeth " Mr A. C. Hanloll read with good effect tho lines of the unhappy Macbeth, and Lady Macbetli's lines were studiously interpreted by Miss E. Ford. "The Taming <rf the Shrew" also constituted a part of the Shakespearean reading?., and the characters were allotted as follows:—Baptista, Mr C. E. Davey; ftremio. Mr T. W.'Whitson ; Tranio, Mr L. T. Burnard; Brondillo, Mr I'. V. Blaiidford; Petruchio, Mr A. C. Hanlon; Katherine, Miss Ilia Whitson. This reading was fully up to the standard of the club's host performances, all those taking part acquitting themselves in a manner which won the hearty appreciation of the audience.
DUXEDIX PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY. The above society's second concert tliU =eason will 1» held in the Garrison Hall or. Thursday, July 1 The two now works which the society are putting on at this concert ere the "Prologue in Heaven" to the opera " llephistopheles," by Boito. the Italian peel ami composer, ond a suite '' Casse Xoiselte" (Nutcracker) by Tschaikowsky. The programme will also include the intermezzo " Cavalleria Rustier,na " (llascagni), " Pizzicato Caprico" CHen'.ev), overture "hi . Memoriam" (Sullivan), and a s-eronsd? I (Strauss) for strings, harp, piano, and orgm, Messrs C. Begg and Co. have kindly loiit a:i organ for this serenade. The vocal' Dart of ■the nrogramnie will bo suDplied by Mr C. S. , Black.
