Among the passengers by the first express yesterday for Chrisielnivcli were Mr J. F. Arnold, and familv; Mr T. K. Sidev. M.H.R.. and Mrs Sidev;' Mr E. G. Allen. M.H.R.. and Ifrs Allen; the Hon. IT. Fe'dwick. M.L.C. and family (Invercargill). Mr A. R. Barclay. M.H.R., left for tho north by the second express. Dr Fitchctt (Solicitor-general), who has been lo England on official business, returned to Wellington by tho Maheno yesterday. Mr W. Eelcher. secretary of the Australasian Federated Seamen's Union, was a passenger by the same steamer. Our Wellington correspondent telegraphs that the Rov. Father Lewis, who has been ill for some days, is in a critical condition. Mr T. M. Wilford. Jf.ti.R., who has been in poor health for some time past, is suffering from an internal trouble, and was confined to his bed yesterday. Tho Hon. Mr Hall-Jones is slowly improving in health. In tho event of his resignation. it is generally understood that Mr G. Laurenson (member for Lyttelton) will enter the Cabinet. Our Y\'ellington correspondent, telegraphed as follows last evening:—Mr J. K. Logan (superintendent of electric lines), who has been to England and America in connection with his department, returned to the colony to-day, after an absence of eight months. Mr Logan found that a great deal of attention was being devoted to tho perfecting of the telephone b; tho adoption of the central battery system—a system that was also being introduced into Xew Zealand. Mr Logan found that in America the people were given au excellent telephone service by private companies, which, he said, also controlled the lighting and power services in the United States. As the result of his travels, Mr Logan lias come to the conclusion that Xew Zealand is pretty well up to date in. matters telegraphic and telephonic.
