THE WEEKLY HALF-HOLIDAY

Considerable uneasiness has been causcd here by the distribution of a circular from Ihe Labour Department ' demanding compliance with "The Factories Act, 1901," requiring women and boys under ployed «in factories to bo given a weekly half-holiday on Saturday. Hitherto they have been given Thursday, tho same afternoon as the shops closc. The drapers who employ tailoresse6, dressmakers, and milliners, and their countrv customers will be greatly inconvenienced, ns Saturday is recognised as market day bv country '|Koplc. Tho subject was brought up at the annual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce this evening, and a resolution was passed requesting tho Minister of Labour to allow the act to remain suspended as heretofore till Parliament meets. A deputation was appointed to wait on the Hon. \V. HallJones during his visit this week. OAMAttU, April 30. At a meeting of the Employers' Association to night it wai deckled to emphatically protest, against the action of the Lalioui' Department in withdrawing the permission to close the factories on the same day as the local half-holidav for shops, and substituting Saturday.
