MELBOURNE, April 30.
In connection with the statements made that contraband trade on the part- of the French residents of the New Hebrides places British traders at a disadvantage, Sir John forrest expressed tho hope that matters would be on a better footing when tho Anglo-French Convention camo into operation. The Federal Government voto of £500 for tho assistance of British eettlers was being used as a bonus on maize. Wherever the price obtained did not reach 6s, the bonus given made up the difference.' So far little of the money had been used.
