MINING.

Thero was no waßli-un on the Rising Sim dredge last week, the dredgmaslcr being engaged in baling out the paddock. The return from the Enterprise diccjge last week was for 97 hours only, the delay being caused through the breaking of eomo pins. Tlie master of the Punt dredge wired on Saturday:—" Still opening out, not bottomed yet-.. No wash-up; river high." The Molyneux River was 10ft sin above tbo normal al Alexandra, on Saturday morning, indicating a fall of Gin sinco the previous day. The secretaryof the Paetolus Company wired on Saturday tliat the master of the No. 2 dredge was engaged repairing the screen, and the return will not be to hand until to-day.

The secretary of the Chicago Company reports by wiro that tho coupling oi the first moiion shaft gave out near tie end of last week.' A new ono was ordered. The new liiley's Revival Dredging Company has nov; been registered, over 1500 shares having bjin applied for out of the 2350 shares placed on the market. Tho company will proceed to allotment to-day.

llie secretary of the Golden Bed Dredging Company reports receipt of tbe following wire front (ho dretigemivstcr:—'" Dredge stopped working on Saturday, 30th inst.; bonus operations of claim in progress." Our Reeffcon correspondent states that the Big Itiver mine manager reports as follows:— " No. 9 level extended ltift for tho week, making a total of HOft from the shaft.' ' Mi' C. S. Reeves, secretary of the New Alpine Consols Company, whose dredge met with such disastrous results oil the occasion of the rooont flood' in the Molyneitx River, returned ta.Dunedin on Friday night, after a visit of inspection to tho claim and tho locality. With'the exception of portion of one of the pontoons, which was washed up against tho Clyde bridge and recovered, practically nothing of the dredge ha-s been saved'. Mr Reaves states that, there did not appear to be any likelihood of further salvage, but possibly when the river goes down something may bo disclosed. Tho remaining pontoon, if recovered, may have some machinery on it, but that' is doubtful. Some of tbe shareholders in the company, having every faith in the richness of the claim, aro desirous that ancither dredge should be put into commission lo complete the working of it. A meeting, of shareholders will be called shortly to consider what is best to bo done. The master of the Central Charlton dtedgo reports a return of 15oz lfohvt for 139 hours' dredging on section 4of the claim. The ground on this section deepened 2ft during tho week, and it is possible there are better results ahead. The full width of the claim is about 2<> chains, of which th<?' present cut is 23 chains. The dredgemaster advises tho dropping of section 5, the ground from which ths two previous return? were obtained. This means that, the face of tho claim will then I>o about 20 chains wide.
