Charles Henry Brornby, which has been announced by cable. Dr Bromby was born on July 11, 1814, and was therefore in his 93rd year when he died. ' He was a scholar of' St. John's College, Cambridge, and had a distinguished academic career in England before he left in 1864 to hocomc Bishop of Tasmania in succession to Bishop Nixon. Ho remained in Tasmania until 1803, when on the .score of advancing years he resigned. For some years afterwards he was assistant Bisliop of Lichfield, and from 1891 to 1900 was assistant Bishop of Bath and \Vclls. His service iu tho church was practically continuous from 1838, when he was appointed a deacon in the tlioceso of Inchfield, until 1900. In Tasmania .he was a "power," not only in the church, but in tho social and educational life of the community. In snito of great handicaps, due to sparscness of settlement and roughlie® of country, he extended the iuflucnro of tlie church all over tlie island. Ho brought to his administration not only great natural gifts, but ripe scholarship and broad views, and when ho left the church was firmly established in tho love and devotion of its children. Dr Broinby was a brother of Dr J. E. Bromby, first head master of the Church of England Grammar School, Melhouriie, and vicar of Old St. Paul's. He has left two sons-' one Henry Bodley Bromby, who was Dean of Hobart, and is now vicar of All Saints', Clifton, England, and Charles Hamilton Bromby, barrister, of London, and formerly Attorney-genc-ral of Tasmania.
