THE NEW ARAWA. CFsou Our Own Correspondent.) LONDON, February 16. A few days ago the Shaw, Saviil, and Albion Company's new steamer Arawa underwent her trial trip, and gave every satisfaction. There was no ceremony at all in conncction with the occasion. Now that the Arawa is completed, tho splendid fleet of the company lias been augmented by the addition of a large (winscrew steamer of over 9000 tons gross register. She was'-built at the Walisend ship yard of Messrs Swan, Hunter, and Wigliam Richardson, and has been specially designed for the passenger scrvico and for tho carriage of refrigerated and general cargo from Now Zealand. Her leading dimensions arc:—Length between perpendiculars, 460 ft; breadth, moulded, 60ft; depth, 42£ ft.

'i'lic Arawa lias five decks—the boat deck, shade dock, shelter dock, upper leek, and main dcck. She has excellent accommodation for about 10 first and second class passengers, and permanent accommodation for 120 third class passengers. A third class dining saloon of largo size has also been arranged on the upper deck. Arrangements have been made _ whereby an additional number of thinl class passengers may be carried 011 the main deck. The vessel is fitted with electric lights and bells throughout, and fresh provisions, fruit, fish, ctc., avo carried in insulated chambers. Ihe mail and specie rooms avo on the upper deck amidships. Of the live holds, three are insulated for tho carriage of frozen meat, dairy produce, the friut, and the refrigerating machinery has been provided by Messrs J. ond 12. Hall, of Dartford. The Arawa will thus carry a large quantity of frozen meat, as wch as of ordinary cargo, with a full supply of bunker coals, Thirteen powerful winches arc provided for working tho cargo, with 15 derricks, one of which is capable of dealing with weights up to 30 toils, lhc steamer is propelled by two sets of triple-expansion engines, constructed liy the Wallsend Slipway and Engineering Company. Steam is supplied from four large natural draught boilers, working al; a pressure of 2051b, fitted with patent smoke-box doors, ami with large fimnei 110 ft high. This machinery will enable the Ar.uva to maintain a speed of 13 knots, telephones are fitted from the capta-iu's bridge to docking bridge and engine room. Powerful steam steering; engine"and gear has been'fitted aft. beside the usual auxiliary gear. A silent ash hoist and automatic tipping bucket with internal shoot, nas been Cited, to reduce to a minimum Ihe annoyance to nassengers which usually accompanies the discharge of ashes.
