TEACHERS' SALARIES.

Sin,—'Mo the payment of; our public school teachers is occupying a-con-siderable amount of public attention, and, with your permission, I would contribute 1o your columns some material towards tho discussion of the question. As a basis of payment, I would propose a fixed salary basctl upon tho division of the certificate held by the teacher. .As a supplement.fo this I would propose, in tho ease of head tcachors, an increnicnt varying with the grade of the school in tho smaller schools and constant in the • laro'cr schools, and an increment varying with tho staff in tho larger schools. In tho ease of assistants I would propose an 'increment varying; with the class of position held by the assistant. ' • Tho principles arc expressed in figures as follow:—Fixed salary for division 5, ■ 3380; for division 4, £100', for division 3, £120; for division 2, £140; for division 1, £160. Increment for attendance for a school of; Grade 1, £10; grade'-2, £20: grado 3, £30, grades 4- and 5,. £40; grade 6, £45; grade 7,. £50; grade 8, tho maximum of £55. Increment for staff. £10 for every member of the sUiff up to £150, and £5 for each additional mcmbor up to ' the maximum of £183. i To express the principles in figures so as to apply them to the payment of assistants in I such a way as to compare with present salaries is not so easy as in tho case of head teachers. Perhaps someone who approves of these principles will -try to do this. Meanwhile. I make lx>ld _to propose a classification of positions of assistants which docs not compare with tho' present methods. I propose the following; classification of assistants:—(l) Junior assistant. working under the immediate supervision of another Assistant; (2) assistant., subject to tho direction of the head master only: (3) responsible assistant, having tho oversight of a junior assistant;' (4) first assistant in schools in which at least two responsible assistants are employed. Increment for portion: £20 for assistant, £40 for responsible assistant, £60 for firifc assistant.—l am, etc., . D. ■B. fOur correspondent has shown in tallies, for which, unfortunately, we cannot afford space, the detailed working of the prnprfi.il he makes and a comparison of the figures with the payments now l'.cin" made to' teacher.? in the various grades.—Kn. O.D.T.]
