SOUTHLAND WINS THE CHALLENGE SHIELD. President, Mr John Mill: vim-prcsidents— Messrs L. R. Wilson (Otngi* Rowing Club), V. W. Platts (Port Chalmers Howinr Club), A. E. Gascoignc iDiincdin Amateur Jjoating Club), J. E. Galbraith (Queen's Drive Boating Club), W. Wills (North End Boating Club), F. W. Mitchell (Oamaru Boating Club); lion, treasurer, Mr F. Turner; lion, eecreiary, Mr E. D. Grace; judges-Messrs A. E. Gascoignc and A. Jl'Gavock (Southland); vmpirc. Mr G. Hogan; starter, Mr J. E. Galbraith; signal steward, Mr J. A. St.ible3; shed steward, Mr B. Provo. The Otago Rowing Association is to be complimented on (ho partial success, at all events, of tho fourteenth annual regatta on Lake Wailiola on Saturday, for although it was impossible to commence tho racinp Ixiforo 4 o'clock in I ho nflorlioon, when tlio lake commenced to subside ii little, the oflicials managed to complete eight of the more important races before darkness set in, and thus warded off tho total failure of the meeting. \ A strong bou]-wester raged all morning; and even up to 2 p.m. there did not appear lo ho the slightest chanco of any of tho races eventuating owing to the heavy sea. The first, race was postponed until 3 o'clock, and juat about- that time- a decided improvement was noticeable. At 3.30 it was considered safe to'send out ihe maiden double sculls, and shortly before 4 o'clock tho live crews loft the slarting-post, and reached home without mishap. Thereafter the programme waa proceeded with as exncditiously as possible, and it was only found necessary to cut out the Youths' Fours, the Junior and Senior Pairs of tho rowing evcnls, while tho Motor Launch Race, was abandoned, and the swimming events were also dispensed with. Altogether the officials did remarkably well. Tho attendance of tho public was not very large at any time during tho day, and the actual racing was only witnessed by u tew hundred spectators, a groat number of those who travelled down in the morning junking un early return in despair of seeing any racing. A dozen or so of bookmakers made spasmodic efforts lo appeal to Ihc sporting propensities of those in attendance, and no doubt did a fair amount of business. As for I ho racing, much of it was exciting, and none- lacked considerable interest. Perhaps most interest was centred in tlio Intcrprovincial Fours between Southland and Olago. Tho former proved to bo the better combination, and desnite tho roughness of the water never seemed to bo in difficulties. Tho Junion Fours was responsible for a keenly-contested event. In this race Oamaru put up a game figlit, nml wore just beaten by North End by a few feel. Undoubtedly the closest thing of Ihe. day was in the Maiden Pairs, which ivc.s decided about 7.30 o'clock, when it was impossible to distinguish the identity of the boats. Tho first three finished with bul half a length to separate them, and hero again tho Oamaru Club narrowly missed scoring iv lino win. On tlio day's sport the racing was of a highly interesting description, particularly after (he "third event, when tlio water was almost all that could be desired. A T o authentic times wore Ihken. Miicli of the credit for tho success of the gathering, is duo to the efforts of Mr Gascoigne (judge). Mr J. K Galbraith (starter), and Mr B, Provo (shed steward), who was indefatigable in his endeavours to get the men out as early as possible. By the courtesy of the Railway Dopartniont a car was put on tho goods train reaching town before 11 p.m.. and Iho men and oflicials were thus enabled lo reach their homes without inconvenience. Tho association's trophies for the. season just onneluded 'have been won as follows:— Interprovincia! Challenge Shield: Southland. Henley Cup: Port Chalmers Rowing Club.
