The Golden Hun dredge was slopped for boiler inspection last week, and, the river being high, advantage was taken of the stoppage to effect a. few minor repairs. The way claims are being held on tin's country is causing adverse' Comment. A few men are holding % whole side ot a country, and doing practically nothing to develop the mines. When dealing with, an application for a battery site at Wilberforce yesterday, Warden Achcson passed some Eevcro strictures on tho inaction ot tho claim-holders on the field. Ho said that, as lar as he could learn, nothing was being done at the Wilberforce, there being no honest attempt whatever at any prospecting work, and the position was now no further advanced than it was two years ago, when Mr Warden Day had expressed the hope of it being a bus) , centre within 12 months. Bo would net deal with the application at tho present time, but would adjourn it for three months to enable the applicants to take the necessary steps to secure a battery, as otherwise- tho privileges asked for would not be considered favourably. There is a lot of excitement here at present ovor the Mount Ihdiant copper mines. Shares are being offered at <£1 apiece, but as tho amount of the proposed capital is not clearly stated sales are limited. Tho ore shown hero is certainly very rich, but tho extent has yet to be proven. About 3lb more of the tin ore was brought to town from the tin mill yesterday. The tin varies in size from about a pennyweight to half an ounce, and in appearance resembles u number of dark stones. All tho sluicing claims are again in lull swing, water being plentiful. The Montgomery is working on rather poor ground, but iho Republic is upon a rich run that will givo handsome returns. At Callaghan's the tail-race is being put in to draw water out of the dam where the. dredge is sunk. 11 is intended to have tie machine working in about a. month. The. No Town is on on improving lot o( wash, tho return being -iloz. This ground is expected ■to last for a few weeks. Tho Pactohis Xo. 1 is on poor and rough wash. The yield for two weeks was Q2oz. OMio No. 2 machine is on the same run that lias been.washed for months past, and got CEoz, This piece of ground bus been tho most consistent- on the creek. Tho Slab Hut dredge got IGoz. The dredgc-msst-sr reports that lie lias had to deal wHh a quantity of silt during the week owing to heavy freshes in the creek. This was the means of losing several hours' dredging.
