Daily Times Ofliw. Saturday evening. IMPORT MARKET. A bank holiday on Monday and a public holiday on Saturday are not conducive to briskness in business, especially with the Kaslcr holidays looming in view. AiW the fact thai this is usually a quiul iiine of year, and tho sparcity of happenings calling for'comment is quite explainable. hi accordance with custom, tho wholesale houses will close from Thursday night, 2Slh insl.,, until Tuesday morning, April 2. for the Eastw holidays, I bus allowing employees and principals alike onuortunily for a run to' the country or seaside. Recent London advices forecast the now liorrini; |iack as likely to be high in price, with a firm market, throughout next scacon.

Singapore reports slate flint sago and tapioca aro increasingly linn, especially tapiora. and Ilial priora are not likely to recede for some limc.lo come. All advance of Jd per lb is reported in arrowroot. Samples arc Io hand of Mildura sullanas ami currants. The currants, although of remarkably line quality, are at a prohibitive- cost, precluding importation. Tho high price of Snivrna. sultanas will, however, make possible ihe importation of (he Mikiura sullanas. which can he quoted on the local market at 6(1 Io f>[<\, according to quality. Tlie fruit is line and fleshy, but Ihe skins are rather totijrh and the flavour somewhat tarter (ban is Iho case with tho Smyrna commodity. The date of shipment of the Mildnra sullanas is as yet uncertain, all orders being subject Io confirmation.

SOUTHLAND MARKETS.

CFiiost Our Own Correspondent.) INVERCARCIILI, Mnrcli 23. During (ho week there has been no ehnngo in the oat market, but the keenness to buy lias pretty well dropped off. .As anticipated last week, prices have receded, and merchants are not inclined to give more thtm 2s 3d to 2s SJd, on trucks, nt country stations, for B grade. Very few sales have Iree.n made to the North Island, the only inquiries being for smalt quantities for immediate shipment, and buyrs from that quarter, not being inclined to do business in any quantity for forward delivery, merchants have been quoting 2s 7-Jtfi (f.0.b., sacks in) for 13 grade, less the ns'.tal brokers' commission. The whole of the onip plferinij from the oountry arc in pooci order, though it is understood Hint what is still in stool; will be slightly discoloured. Taking the Western district all through, the crop is practically all stacked, though round about Wairio, Wrey's Bush, and Nightcaps there is a quantity still in stoolt and a few paddocks yet to cut. Those connected with the business in Invercargill arc not at all sanguino about the state of the ras-rkot, tha general opinion being that prices will still come back a little. The chaff market is firm, with a very keen demand, prices luling at £3 l's Gd to £1, on tracks, at country stations. ■ Although there has not been much doing in linseed, a few sales have been put through at 53, on trucks, at country stations. A few lines of wheat have been offering from the country, and for milling quality as . high as 3s 3d, oil trucks, at country stations, lias been paid. Fowls wheat is selling at 3s to 3s Id. Offerings from the country of ryegrass have almost ceased, though any lines coming forward ttre still readily placed at from -Is to 4s 3d from the mill. A few sale.3 of potatoes have taken place during the week at £1, on trucks, at country stations, but the business is only for immediate delivery and local consumption. Msrchnnts are not inclined to do any business for forward delivery in the meantime, while, on the other hind, the growers are all nominating £5, oh trucks, at country stations: The sheep market is very firm, no change having taken place sinco last week's report. Ewes are still in good demand, with a strong inquiry for yoiinj sorts, prices ruling from 15s to ISs Gd. the lntter being for two and four-tooth mixed. Good forward wethers are in request at from IGs to 17s 6d. The inquiry for lumbs lias eased a little, a3 it is getting towards the end of the season for fattening. Store lambs for wintering are selling from 11s to 12s Gd. There is still a good demand for primo beef, and nt last AVnllacetown sales values ruled horn £10 to £11 for good bullocks, medium sorts from £i 10s to £9, heifer and cow bscf from £i 10s (o £6 ids. while pome extra lisavy cows made up to £8. These prices show lx-.ef to equal 23s per 1001b. Good forward cattle are bci«g inquired for for fattening purposes. Several lines have changed hands at £S 10s to £B. Young cattle (unless well-bred sorts) are hard to place at any money. Daily cows arc selling from £1 10s to fG 10s. The iibrc market, unfortunately, is still in a. very dull state, and the peculiar position has arisen during the wcek_qf there being more sellers than buyers. Millers are not content to accept His prices ruling, and very little business has been doue during the pftsi week. Merchants have been tinnblc to do business with London at prices which would net about £30 10s for "fair," and as the bulk of the fibre that is manufactured comes under this grade the present outlook is not very promising. The inquiry for tow is still on a good basis, mu , . satisfactory sabs have been made during the week.,
