PRODUCER GAS v. STEAM.

Tho undoubted utility and economy of suction gas engines as a means of propulsion.has stimulated Ihe zeal of quite a host of engineers and inventors. Us success as applied Id stationary land engines is too well known to call for more than passing notice, but its claim as a serious rival to. stcaiii on navigable vessels of any size has not yet been fully demonstrated. The l!eardmoi'c-Ca|)ilaino producer gas engine is regarded as being the greatest advance in this direction so tar, and lias been favoured with plenty of capital to aid its development. Willi so iniihy clever wits at work, it is only a qiuwlion of time when the explosion engine will displace the steam engine, with its present severe tax for coal supplies, -the difference in economy of working being so greatly in favour of tlio former that the surmounting of present difficulties is being awaited with keen interest in the shipping world. Men in all countries arc now engaged upon it, and sooner or later sonic lucky inventor i.s fiiro to strike the trail, and so earn the distinction and reward which is in waiting.
