(Received March 22, at 10.4 p.m.) 11l the House of Lords the Earl of Crewe (Lord President of the Council) announced that the Government was opposed to the proposed Channel tunnel. Lard Lansdowne stated that he retained the opinion tliat the tunnel would be a great convenience, but he did not believe it was possible to convince the nation that they would run no risk by the tumid. Therefore its construct inn would occasion a new source of anxiety in peace time and a. grave additional causo of anxiety in war time. Major-general Baden-Powell, replying to a correspondent, said he considered the tunnel would lie a mistake from a strategic standpoint.
