TRADES AND LABOUR COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Otago Trades and Labour Counoil was held on Wednesday evening. The president (Mr W.. Pattison) occupied the chair, and there was ft good attendanoo of delegates. Tho Minister of Labour wrote intimating that the council's vesolution suggesting that a regular circuit bo fixed in connection with tho sitting of tho .Arbitration Court is receiving the favourable consideration of tho Government. The Minister of Lands, writing in regard lo tho Blaokstono Hill Runs, intimated that the council had been misinformed, as tho lease did not terminate until tho lafc of March, and that the would take place on April 9.—lt was resolved to hold over consideration of the letter pending further information. Dr Mason, Chief Health Officer, wroto 'thanking the council for its resolution re tho proposed mcdieal' examination of school children, and expressing tho hope that a system of inspection will soon bo in practico which will prevent tho undoubted injury now taking place from continuing. Tho Wellington Trades Council forwarded a draft of constitution for a Now Zealaud Federation of Labour, which it desires should. bo considered at tho Easier Conference.—Tho constitution was referred to tho conferenco delegates. Tho Secretary of tho Seddon National Memorial Committeo, Wellington, forwarded a. subscription list in connection with same. As it was -reported by dolegates that similar lists were being- forwardod to tho unions, it was resolved that tho list should lio on the table to enable delegates to subscribe to the fund. Tho Hon. Secretary Brighton Railway League wroto asking tho counoil to receive r doputation re oxtendiim the Walton Park branch railway to Brighton.—Tho deputation, consisting of Messrs M. Stevenson and M'lntosh, was received. They slated the object tho league had in view, and fully explained the many advani tages to bo gained by having railway ■ communication with Brighton. Tho deputation' also extended an invitation to the council to appoint five or six delogatos, whom tlwy would bo pleased to take for a drive to Brighton, and explain to them all the advantages to be gainod by having the railway.—lt was rosolved lo acoept the invitation, and Messrs Patti6on, Haymes, Mnnro, Ut-tlcy, Westwood, Brcen, and Ferguson wero appointed to represent tho council. The Secretary Bannockburn section of tho Otago Central Railway Lcamio and tho Secretary Dunedin Branch, Dunedin, wroto inviting a representative of tho council to the opening of the railway lino to Clyde.—lt was resolved to appoint tho Hon. J. T. Paul, M.L.C., to represent' tho council at tho opening of•'the railway. .Reference was rnnde to the eovere lose oustained by Mr J. Crow through the death of his' wife, and tho secretary was instructed to convey 'the sympathy of- tho council to Mr Crow in his sad bereave ment.
