WELLINGTON TRADES AND LABOUR COUNCIL.

A SIGNIFICANT RESOLUTION. HOTEL BARS AND SHOPS. (Per United Peess Association.) WELLINGTON, March 22. Tho Trades and Labour Council protests against what it terms " misleading statements" in tho Labour Journal. Last month's Journal stated:—"Building trade, Wellington: Good in all brandies, especially plastering." Tho council delegates declare that the plastering trado is tar from brisk; in faot, it. is slack. . The following remit to tho Trades and Labour Conference at Easter was agreed to:—"That the conference consider in committee and advise tho councils and unions of tho colony on tho following matters having reference to the operation of the Conciliation and Arbitration Act;—(l) Tho underlying principles of tho act; (2) tho present and probable future effects of the act upon the character, standing, and progress of the trades wiioii movement; and (3) the present and probable future offcets of the act on the economic and social conditions of tho workers of the colony." A long discussion ensued on tho report of the deputation which recently met the Minister of Labour. Tlvo council expressed dissatisfaction with the reply of the Minister to the effect that " hotels were not shops." The delegates considered that the licensing law did not affect tho working of the Shops and Offices Act, and that as far as hotel bars were concerned they were covered at least by the Shops Act. A motion was carried instructing the secretary to write to tho Minister of Labour asking him to have a test caso taken tc the courts on the subject.
