SCHOOL HEADERS.
A NEW SERDvfj SUGGESTED. (Pek Uhitid Press Assocuhok.) AUCKLAND, March 20. Tim Chief Inspector of Schools in tho Auckland province (Mr D. Pctric) submitted a report, to the Education Board to-day on .the Question of changing the school readers, as follows:—"I Ix>g to bring under the noticc of the board the desirability of making a ohango in tho principal series of waders now in neo in tho schools of the cblony. jr. is a 3cod few years since theso books were introduced, and they havo long since liecomc stale both to teachers and to pupils. Knowing tho objections invariably raised to all cliangcs of works, I would suggest that the board decide that a new set ol principal readers shall bo adopted in tho beginning of tho year 1909, and I hat a commit Ice of suilable composition be set up at an early dato to examino .and report upon recent scries of school readers with a view to selooting the hist that can ho had for nse in our schools," Mr Greon-sladc, M.H.R., eaid that ho was very strongly opposed to the changing of soltool books. There should be some uniformity. The Minister seemed disposed to do something in the matter, and ho strongly opposed any addition to the charges cast upon parents. The Chairman (Mr Bagnall) pointed out that the department was about to issue a school magazine, and moved—"That tho matter bo deferred until (lie outcome of tho department's proposals in this regard was seen." If Mr Petrie's recommendation was carried out there would be ten years lwtwcen the changes. That could not bo called "very frequent changing" of books. Tho motion deferring tho matter wa6 agreed to. 1
