Sin,—Tho public and ratepayers have boon waiting anxiously to 6ce how the Drainage and Sewerage lioard deals with Mr Cardew'a report and proposals. Tlioy promised jo sot apart a day for publicly discussing it, and yet. they liavo not done so. Indeed, the system they liavo got into of going into committee 011 tho slightest pretext, and of deciding upon very largo questions of putlay without publicly discussing tho merits and demerits cf what they do, is becoming serious. Tho pre S3 is being trammelled, and tho public is being kept in ignorance, as to whether the members of tho hoard really understand what they arc doing. I'or example. Ihey have let a contract for tho construction of a sewerage' outtall at Lawyer's Head; yet it is this Yery point tho Government and several incmbors of the board said in tile past, would, it used for an outfall, pollute tho beaches. Havo they honestly got tho Government's' permission for this work? Then, they havo called for tenders for a cast-iron rising main, of 3ft 6in diameter. Aro they satisfied Mr Cardow'a calculations of the capacity required are correct? Or havo tlioy clearly ascertained whether tho old rising l main could not ho more cheaply repaired than getting a new one? What does their engineer (Mr Stringer) report:— J am, etc..
