One of those declares that Thomas a'Beckef, who used to visit the Archbishop of Canieiliurv at his palace in-the village, planted with his own hand the most venerable of the fig trees still extant. Arboriculturists are doubtful as to the possibility 0 f a lis tree reaching the groat a<;e of nearly SCO years, but they are. so they say, plenty of fig trees at Tarring that have flourished there for over a century and a-lialf. And that seems a respectable age for trees which 6till bear fruit,
