Hall, Tho entries wero large, about one-third more [ than last year, and the exhibits wero of . a high standard of cxcellencc—indeed, tho 1 judga (Ml- Cousins, of St. Clair, Dunedin) expressed tho opinion that, the fruits, | flowers, and vegetables wero the best ho , lias seen this season in both quantity and , quality, this being due to sonic extent to s tho good fortune of Southland in having s much moro favourable weather than places t further north. Ho was specially pleased - with the colour of tho apples, which lie re- . Rarded as equal io those of Central Otago, Tho principal takers of first prizes were t G. Couling, W. Samson, W. Smith, Mrs ' Hunter, F. A. Steans, C. S. Longuct, .T. Stewart, A. Brandford, A. Robertson in i pot plants; and in cut flowers and othnr • classes, F. A. Steans, Edginton Bros., W. ; Samson, Lennio and Sons, J. B. Patorson, ' D. Anderson, J. Ncili, W. Smith, C. 8. Longuet, E. Meredith, ft. Stenhonse, A. • Mendelsohn (Dmicxlin), Mrs S. Watson, R. ' W. The last-named gentleman, who is tho secretary of tho Southland C'liaritahlo ( Aid Board, exhibited a splendid lofc of i vegetables, including' sea kail and spinaoh, which can only bo grown with difficulty in : Southland, as an answer to the assertion - that the land recently acquired by tiio I board at TCcw, oiv which tho vegetables were raised, would not grow anything.
