MINING.

The height of the rivor on Saturday morning was 7tt llin above the normal mark at Alexandra. . The Waikaka Queen dredge was undergoing repairs last week. The master of the Rise aud Shine 2\'o, 1 dredgo wires that prospects were improving. The screen pinion wheel on the Callaghan's Creek dredge broke last week. Dredging was to be resumed to-day. There will be no return to hand until Saturday next. The Waikaka United Company's No. 2 dredge was working up the corner .next tho hill side last week. The second motion shaft had broken, and was being welded iu Gore. The Nokomai Hydraulic Sluicing Company will shortly undertake tbe erection of a, third elevator at its claim. ,It will be remembered that about 12 months ago the Nokomai Company purchased, for £650, what is known as ( tho Lion water race property—a property which included' about 30 miles of wafer race, and which cost the original company over fCO.OOO. Tho water is derived from the Lion Creek, and the Nokomai Company is entitled to draw 40 heads therefrom.' Through this new race the company will bring in about 2a heads of water to work.the No. 3 olevator. We understand from tho chairman that the erection of this elevator will mean to the company^an expenditure of something like £1000, and that if the work is put in hand very shortly it is more than likely that shareholders will not receive their usual dividend this month. The manager .of tho Barewood mine makes tho following progress report for the week ended lGth inst:—"Mine: The rise has been put up a further distance of 13ft; stone 'rather harder; otherwise no change. Good progress has been made fitting battery frame timber. Battery: Worked full time, less 10 hours' stoppage during removal 'of tank, making connections, etc. Stone crushed 50 tons." . DREDGING RETURNS. During the wsk ended Saturday, February 23, returns were reported from tlie following'-, dredges:— ' , Oz. dwt. gr.
