A largely-attended public meeting was held in the evening, -when Mr Page (Christchurch) read a paper upon "Women as Citizens." Resolutions were ipassed—(l) Affirming tho economic independence of married women; (2) calling the attention of the women of New Zealand to tho importance of electing women to the school committees at the forthcoming election; (3) protesting against (he disabilities under which women labour in civil and political life. February 19. The convention of the Women's Christian Temperance Union was resumed to-day, when the following officers were elected for the ensuing year,'-President, Mrs Colo (Christchurch); president at large, Mrs A. R. At-kinson (Woliin^fon); corresponding secretary, Mrs Dohrmanii, iI.A. (Waimate); assistant corresponding secretary, Miss Webb (Ormondville); recording secretary, Mrs Powell (Waiiganui); treasurer, Miss M'C'artli.v (Waihao Downs). Misses L. Jr. Smith and Jessio M'Kay were re-appointed editors of the White Ribbon, and Mrs Spencer as business manager, all being heartily thanked for past services. Ruuerintendents of departments were appointed as follows:—Evangelistic, Mrs Kirkland (Dunedin); home meetings. Miss Moody Bell (Dunedin); purity, Mrs Webb (Ormondville); educational meetings, Miss Powell (Wangamii); Salibatti observance, Mrs W. T. Liil (Willowby); work among ihe young people, Mrs Spenco (Auckland); medal contests, Mr (Napier); scientific temperance instruction, Miss Maunder (Ilawera); nnfermented wine, Mrs Caskin (Greymouth); press, Mrs Mitchell (Invcrcargill); mothers meetings. Mrs Kirkland (Dunedin); Bible in schools, Mrs Dowar (Ponsonb.y); narcotics, Miss Webb (Ormondville); work among seamen, Mrs Whitby (Lyttelton); peace and arbitration, Mrs E. 0. Somerville ■ (One,l'unga); literature, Mrs Hughes (Auckland); anti-gamblin" Mrs MacAlister .(Wellington); lew! and Parliamentary, Mrs Shoppard (Christchurch). Resolutions were passed expressing satisfaction at Dr Pomare's refutation of the statement- that lie applied for permission for alcoholic liquor to be used at the fatlgi of Toliu, and thanking the Hon. jas. Carroll for his reply on that occasion; calling ihe attention of the Minister of Justice to the lax administration of the law in no-license districts; expressim? appreciation and sympathy with the efforts of the "suffragettes" of Oreat Britain in their efforts to obtain the freedom and rights which tho women of New Zealand possess; protesting against Sir -Tosenli Ward's proposal that the profits obtained by the totaliator 1m» applied to benevolent purposes. Invitations were received to hold the convention of J9OR in Auckland, Kaiapoi, Invercargill, and Wellington, and the first-named was accepted.
