Maintenance.—Charles Honvood, who had been arrested in Chriatclmrch, nnd who; appeared in tho dock minus 0110 leg and with tile other in a drenctfiil state of hone disease-, was charged with failing to provide for the maintenance o! his illegitimate child nt Kaitangata.—JLr A. K. Hal-clay appeared for the accused, who pleaded " Guilty," but who paid he was unable to pay. Counsel said it would bo impossible under the circumstances to make an order against accused, who would have ta return to the hospital.—Accused said he was to have, been admitted to the hospital at Christchurch that morning. His brothers wero krepin? him.—Tho Magistrate said he did not, feel disposed, to go into the case without the evidence of the mother.—Cliicf-detec-live Herbert: She can bo here to-morrcnv probably.—Kemanded until to-day, bail being allowed iu ono surety of £25 and in accused in £>5. The Inebriates.—Two first offenders were fined 5s and 2s cab hirey or 21 hours, nnd ]0s or JS hours, for having been, found drunk on Saturday. William lienry Itayner was fined ss, with tho usual alternative; and Nicholas Tre'sider 10?, or 48 hours, for the same offence. Station-sergeant King said there were some peculiar circumstances connected with the last two cases. The- two men were companions, and some, property which was believed to liaro been stolen had been found in Trcssidor's possession.
Assault.—James Duff pleaded "Guilty" to drunkenness and assaulting John Wilson Un-lawfully-Fined ss, with "the usual atwnative, on the first charge, and 20s. or 14 days, on the second, the sentences to be concurrent. Wilful Damage—John Cluny M'Pherson was charged with wilfully damaging one window, the property of 1!. Walker, and pleaded "Guilty."—Station-sergeant King said tins was the result of a dispute between accused and another man outside. Accused had made good tho damage.—Fined 10s, or seven days' imprisonment.
