PUBLIC HEALTH DEPARTMENT.
IMPORTANT ALTERATIONS PENDING.
WELLINGTON, January 7. Speaking of tho unification of the Public Health Department and the hospitals of the colony, the Minister of Public Health (the Hon. G. Fowlds) said he was a strong believer in local administration so far as the hospitals were concerned, and against centralisation, though he thought that, aa tho Government provided a. large proportion of the total cost of the upkeep, it should have a little more control than at present. The Minister intimated that he was looking out for a site for a central mental hospital in the North Island, which would relieve Mount View Hospital, Wellington. All the mental hospitals were practically full, a.nd it would bo better to establish a central institution than extend the existing institutions.
The Government proposes making provision for the establishment of receiving institutions in each of the four centres, where persons in incipient stages of insanity can s;o, cither Tolunfaiily or be committed, for observation and special treatment. In these the patients will receive more individual treatment than is now possible in the large mental hospitals, which will be an iffipsrtwjt factor in. effecting cutev
