GOVERNMENT PURCHASE OF NATIVE LANDS.

£F?.oit Oun Ovra Correspondent.) AUCKLAND, December 17. It is reported at Raglan that the Government, has nearly completed negotiations for the purchase of 13,000 acrcs of the To Altau Block of Native land. Tho Mangate clearings—well grassed dairy land, capable of carrying 1000 head of dairy stock—are included in the block. The block is interesting from an historic point of view on account of a dispute as to ownership between the Tainui tribe (who are now in possession) and the Ngaiatahunga';. The lease of several areas by the Tfiitmis to Europeans some months back caused trouble, the Ngatatahungas objecting to the Tainui making a profit out of the land while the ownership was still in dispute. The purchase of the estate by the Government will necessitate a final decision as to the ownership. Thirty blocks of Native land on the East Coast, from Wfiiroa to Waiapu, containing a total of about. 40.000 acrcs, have been acquired by the Government, and will be teased at auction.
