MEETINGS OF SOCIETIES.
A meeting of tiie Ot?;go Lodge, U.A.0.D., was held on Wednesday evening, A.D. Bro. liigljy presiding. Three now members were proposed. One member was initiated into tho order. Tlio lodge will pay a visit lo the Couft Woodlands Pride (Lady Foresters) on Monday, Saplembc-r ]0. Invitations to visit tho Bay, Lily of the Valley, and Ivanhoe Lodges wore received and accepted. Amongst tlio visitors were Bros, llitchcll, Ford (Lily of the Valley), Birt, Jelly (Mornington), Easton, sen,, Easton, jun. (Royal Oak), and Chavano (Queensland).
The fortnightly meeting of tlio West Harbour Lodge, U.A.0.D., was held on Thursday, A.D. Bro. C. Baiid presiding, and all officers being present. After the business of tho lodge was finished, the lodge was closcd to allow the members to get the hall decorated fer the annual social, which v:a3 held on Friday evening, and was a great success. The Grand Lodgo was represented by P.D.G.P.'s Bros. Kellett mid Bryant, and G.S. Bro. Lnrnach and P.A. Bro. Sunderland. During tho evening G.S. Brc. Larnach presented to D.P. Bro. Connor two handsome pictures on behalf of tlio lodge for having passed through tho chairs a second time, and also gave a record of tho lodge frorii its beginning, which was very interesting. Bro. Connor returned thanks. Tho duties of M.C. were carried out by A.D. Bro. C. Baird and V.A. Bro. P. Harridge. A word of praise is due to the Secretary Bro. James Blackie, and tho committee for their endeavour to make the socia'. such a success.
The Dundas Street Primitive Jlethodisl 'Mutual Improvement Society and Caversliam Baptist Young Men's Club debated on Friday last the question: "Is tho tendency of tho present Government to intcrfc-ie with private enterprise detrimental to the best interests of the colony?" Messrs Lowden (leader), Roberta." Kennedy, and Gve, aud Messrs A. M'Elutcllon (leader), Stewart, AVingfield, and Shacklock were the respective teams. A good debate was the result. Tho umpire (Mr G. Wilkinson) gave his decision in favour of the Oavei&liam team—who defended the negative side—by a narrow margin of points. The debate was a spirited one, and some good speeches mo made, and the umpire congratulated the ch>b3 on the ability displayed.
