Further particulars in connection with tha mysterious shooting affair .which occurrcd at Nowton on Saturday night- show that James Furlong, 23 years of age, rushed into his mother's bowe saying he had been shot by a man whom he could not describe. Dr Davis, who examined Furlong, stales that, the bullet wound in Furlong's ncck is not a serious one, but it is evident that the weapon was held within a few inches of Furlong's throat. This does not agree with Furlong's statement that his assailant fired across tho street at him.

FIOILDING, August 6. A brutal assault is reported from Awa--liuri yesterday, where a man named John Whelnn assaulted an old man, Patrick Ac-he, in a whare with r. piece of firewood, severely injuring him about the head. Tho victim, who is in a dangerous condition, wda taken to the Pulnicrston Hospital. Whehiti was brought before the Feilding Court today and remanded.
