THE SALVATION ARMY.

The. twenty-first annual meeting of tho Port Chalmers branch, of tho Salvation Army was held in the local barracks last evening. The weather, unfortunately, proved very bleak and disagreeable, which fact doubtless accounted for. the- comparatively small attendance. Mr K. G. Allen, M.i-i.K, occupied the chair. The Revs.

K. C. Tennent and 6. W. Christian occupied seats on the platform, and the representatives of the local corps and their friends were present in force. After singing and prayer Ensign Greene called upon the chairman to address those present. Mr Allen, said ho regarded it as a pleasure and privilege to ho present at tho meeting. He congratulated the Army upon (ho manner in which it had progressed both in strength and usefulness. The secret of its success was duo to the fact that its soldiers and officers were ever ready lo render assistance to tho needy, the waif, the orphan, the sick, and suffering, irrespective of creed or race. Mr Allen paid a high tribute to the manner in which the various philanthropic organisations of the Army were administered, and referred to the fact that to a very large extent those wore self-sup-porting. Owing to the marked success of the Prison Gate Brigade ho thought it, would be well if means could bo devised whereby their sphere of usefulness in this direction could he enlarged. After referring to the immense amount of good work done by the Army in helping tho needy, tho outcast, and the unfortunate, ho paid a glowing tribute to the vast amount of good work done by tire Inquiry Department nil over the workl. From lime to time they found that tho philanthropic made large bequests to various institutions, but why was it that so little was given to help tho Army in their noble work? He could conceive oi no object so worthy of active monetary support as that in which the Army were cngagetl, and if those possessed of means to spare would give liberally they could rest assured that their benefactions would be put to tho best possible use for the uplifting of humanity and the amelioration of human suffering.—(Applause.)

Ensign Greene then read the report on the social work accomplished by tho Army throughout the world during the past year, ietails of which have already been published in our columns. He made special reference to the work now being doncin caring for neglected and orphan infant girls in this colony. At the conclusion of his address Ensign Greene was accorded a very hearty round of applause. The Rev. E. C. Tenncnt addressed those present, and paid a warm tribute to the good work accomplished by tho Army officers and workers. The Rev. tt. i\.
