SUICIDE AND ATTEMPTED SUICIDE.

LYTTELTON, Aly 22. On Saturday evening Jamos Pope, 41 years of age, a market gardener, residing at Governors' Bay, at tho head of Lyttclton Harbour; committed suicide by blowing liis Hoad oh" with a gun Iwforc the eyes of a 14-year old daughter. Mrs Pope states that her husband had complained of ill-health. Some time two months ago he consulted a doctor, who advised him to go to tho hospital for treatment. He refused, and frequently threatened suicide. He made an unsuccessful attempt to shoot himself previously, when under the influence of liquor, He left homo on Saturday aftornoon to shoot rabbits, and afterwards went to a hotel, where, he had two drinks. His wifo went to look for him, but missed her husband. who went home, met his little- daughter at tho door, placed tho muzzle of tho gun in his month, prosed the trigger with his foot, and blew his brains through the top of his head. Tho body was brought to Lyttellon. where an inquest will bo hold on Monday. AUCKLAND, July 22. Ono of the recent arrivals from.the Old Country by tho Devon was found lying under a bush near Ponsonby road suffering from a wide wound in his throat. A sinail penknife was lying beside him. The boys who discovered him immediately communicated with Constable Dunn at the Ponsonby police station, who was near, and upon going to the spot he found the man with a. wound some nine inches long in the throat and a small cut on the wrist. Tho man was taken to the hospital, but refused to say anything about himself whatever. Investigation, however, disclosed that, ho was one of the Devon's immigrants, named William Dibbs, a singlo man, of about 25 years of age. Dibits appears to have beeomo very respondent since ho arrived, owing to beins; alone out here without ajiy friends. Ho is described as a grocer's assistant. Tho wounds aro not dangerous.
