The Fiji Islands are at present overrun with grass-hoppers, much to the chagrin of the sugar-cane planters, and various ideas have been propounded by which to put down, or at all events to stem, the incursions of the pest. The latest experiment with a view to thinning the numbers of tlio pest rests with Messrs Carr and Doyle, planters, at Lautoka, who are forwarding 100 turkeys from Sydney by tho steamer Navua. Their intention is to permit tho birds to run the plantations, and ascertain their value as a power for, in a measure, preventing the wholesale destruction of tho sugar cane. Should the venture prove successful, further batches of turkeys will Iw introduced, and distributed about the Ba River, as well as in the Lautoka district.
