INVERCARGILL UNDER NOLICENSE.
(Fr.ou Our Own ConitESPONnraT.) INVKRCARGILL, .July 8. _ "Durinjv- n, O - (V ,;ek Invercargill lias been singularly free from oases of drunkenness, no! oil!' locally-manufactured case having been reported. Fewer people came iii from the count!';.- by Saturday morning's train?, hnf ihis was no doubt partly «Jno to Ihe unpleasantness of the. weather.' The usual crowds from the country came in during; the evening", but an inspection of the onl-going trains did not reveal one, ease of intoxication, nor is there any evidence that any who wont outside the hounds for liquor returned inebriated. Before the closing of the hotels it was contended by
some opponents of the new regime that. luimiioss generally would suffer, especially hairdressers anil fish shops. There is no complaint so far by hairdressers, but several fish-simp proprietors say that ilie trade in cr-nkpfl fish has 'entirely ceased. One, however, reports that though the Saturday night pushes did not turn tip liis week's takings were as good as usual. No special provision was made for Saturday night jo enable those who particularly desire drink lo so out to Walhiceiown for it, but I understand that in future, instead of two 'buses leaving for that township at 10 p.m. on .Saturday, one of them will leave for Makareiva at 9 p.m. and return to town about 11, enabling the thirsty ones to run along to the Wnllacclown .function Hotel, secure a sleek, and catch Ihe 'bus back to lo.wn. I understand that orders are comber freely to the depots established by the local brewers jn.4 outside the electorate, out beyond tlw Waihopai. and that one of the brewers is negotiating for a. motor car to facilitate deliveries. I have not heard of any shortage of lodging accommodation, am! the police cell was untenanted on Saturday night.
