Tuc installation of the new Mayor took place in tho Borough Council Chambers last Wednesday evening in tho- presence of the retiring Mayor (Mr Thomas Smith), and Crs Heckler, Johnston, Kerr, Rendall,'and Stewart. In his retiring address Mr Smith said he had taken great interest in tlio affairs of the borough, especially with rcgord to having the streets put into belter order, and lie mentioned specially several works that had been undertaken and carricd out during hia term of office. Mr B.' \V. Fell, having made tho statutory declaration, was then duly installed, and, on taking bis seat, thanked tho council and ratepayers for the honour they had conferred on him, und said ho would try to fulfil all the duties of offico to the best of his ability during his term, and he asked for the cordial support and co-operation of the council in carrying out the duties devolving on him by virtue of bia office. The annual distribution of prizes to the scholars attending St. John's Sunday School took place on Tuesday evening last, and there was a very good attendance, no doubt because the l?ev. C. Fraer, former vicar of the parish,' was present.' The Rev. H. B. Jones, vicar, presided, and opened the meeting with prayer. The report stated that 128 books had been added to tho library, which had been cleared of damaged hooks, and tho total number of volumes was now 302. The scholars' roll had increased by seven, and the amount subscribed for the Melaneman Mission was £3 i2s Gd. Regret was expressed that Mr Davis, tha superintendent, had felt called upon to resign owing to various other duties, Tho Rev. C. A. Freer gave an interesting account of his personal work among the Maoris at the Kaiapoi Kaik, and expressed his pleasure at being able once again to have a social evening wit it liia old parishioners. Several musical itema were given, and refreshments wore handed round. A numbor of games were indulged in by the children, and tho meeting closed at ID p.m. with the singing of " Got! save thf ■ \King." ■ '
